What exactly do orthopaedic mechanics do in their training?

If you've already screwed up your foot, your doctor was certainly there with a splint that should support your foot so that you can show off better. You'll use the term orthotic to create rails like that, and you'll work as an orthopaedic mechanic. And that's not all: During your three years of training, you will learn about the most varied orthopaedic tools, all of which you will make using machines and by hand. In addition to orthoses, these include artificial limbs, i.e. prostheses and bandages. Even wheelchairs can become your subject.

Because you have chosen a dual training course, you will learn as a future orthopaedic mechanic not only in a company, but also in a vocational school. The fact that you can familiarise yourself with orthotics, create flawless bandages and explain electronic aids are just some of the requirements you will find in your craft organisation. By the way: You didn't have the opportunity to pursue a career as an orthopaedic mechanic a few years ago. Indeed, until 2013, there was only the orthopaedic training of orthopaedic mechanic and bandage maker.

In the workshop you form metal based on orthopaedic specifications, used for example for rails. Or you heat plastics to deform it and make seat shells or supports. And if a patient receives an electronically controlled prosthesis, then you are also the man or woman in case. Indeed, in the orthopaedic mechanic training you will also learn about important electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic components. Once you have completed a tool, you can put it at the patient's disposal and explain how to handle it.
The training as an orthopaedic mechanic is therefore suitable for very different people. Here you can not only let off steam in a crafty way, but at the same time you are socially involved and you are in an important sector of orthopaedics and rehabilitation. But for the training to work as well, you should have an interest in mathematics in addition to craft skills and enjoy working with patients. Apply for one of the free training places in one of the future professions in the health sector. Here you can choose with your orthopaedic know-how and then for jobs in the crafts of orthopaedic shoe makers or in the accident surgery of a clinic, in rehabilitation or a nursing home.
