What does a millwright do?

In the carpentry mechanic apprenticeship, there's no forest of tasks waiting for you, but there's always plenty to do. Care and safety have top priority, because with a sloppy work method, you can not only cripple production, but also get injured on a saw, for example.

Operating machinery Without systems that turn logs into lumber, nothing works. Over time, you will know every button and master the control of the equipment without any problems.

Keep an eye on the control monitors : a monitor here and a camera there - in your cockpit, located above the conveyor belts, you can monitor all processes and see if everything is running smoothly.

Correcting errors : machines are not error-free either. If something goes wrong in production, you can see it immediately and repair the damage immediately - even if you have to get heavy logs on the production line on track.

Replacement of spare parts : making minor repairs or replacing individual parts is also part of your job. For example, machine saws need to be changed from time to time - you'll soon be able to handle this razor-sharp material almost blindfolded.

Quality control : You not only keep an eye on the production of your wood products, but also on the result: For example, you can test the pressure under which the treated wood breaks in a special facility.

How does the training to become a carpentry mechanic work?

If you want to become a millwright, you have to complete a dual training course that lasts three years. This means that you spend about two days a week in vocational school and spend the remaining days doing the work in a dangerous way. However, when training to become a carpentry mechanic, more often than not, block courses are on hold. Then you sit at the school desk for several weeks at a time - sometimes even several times a year. In any case, you can expect subjects such as German, social studies or sports. On the other hand, you can expect lessons related to topics such as wood selection, solid wood products or wood-based materials. In addition, vocational schools do not do without practice: for example, the operation of existing appliances is explained or various tools are sharpened. You can then apply the knowledge in your training company.

Can I specialize as a carpentry mechanic?

As a future carpentry mechanic, you have a choice of one area similar to a specialization. During your training, you choose one of the four areas of interest, which is also taught at the vocational school. You decide with your training company which one it will be in the end. You can deepen your knowledge in the following areas :

  • Manufacture of sawmill products
  • Manufacture of planed products
  • Manufacture of glued wood products
  • Manufacturing of wood-based products

Where can I work as a millwright?

As a millwright, you are comfortable working in the woodworking industry. The sawmill industry and planer mills in particular are always looking for suitable trainees. The wood-based materials industry is also open to you. Regardless of the exact company, you will mainly work in factories or production halls. Following the motto "where there's planing, there's also shavings", it can be noisy and dusty here. From time to time, you will even work outside, for example when new goods are delivered. That way, you won't let the wind and weather stop you.

What are the working hours as a carpentry mechanic?

You can get used to the terms early and late shift. During your apprenticeship, you will often need to be on weekdays, but as a qualified millwright at the latest, you can expect shift work in many cases.

Depending on the job, you can't be without safety glasses, gloves or hearing protection on the job - safety comes before appearance.

What is the difference between a wood mechanic and a carpenter mechanic?

The big difference is the end product. As a carpenter, you use different machines than a millwright and turn wood into furniture or frames, for example, while the millwright tends to produce boards, plywood or particleboard. Plus, both apprenticeships offer other opportunities to focus on.

What qualifications do I need for a carpentry mechanic apprenticeship?

What kind of person do I need to be to become a carpentry mechanic?

You are technically gifted : In this trade, machines are your friend and helper. You have to know how they work, how to set them up and how to operate them. You can even control some systems from a cockpit and keep an eye on everything. Then you will notice immediately if a production is not going as it should.

You're technically proficient : measuring wood or sharpening saw blades - there are enough areas of work that you need to get right. You always work with special attention. Because nothing can happen to you or your systems.
