What does a hydraulic engineer do?

Hydraulic engineers are mostly employed by the Federal Water and Shipping Administration or by the water associations of the countries. Fewer companies specialising in water construction also employ water producers. Daily life is often very varied, as work is sometimes also done in an office of the administration, in case documentaries or working papers have to be made. Otherwise, you will travel to the most diverse locations with waterways and perform the most diverse tasks.

How does the training for a hydraulic engineer work?

The dual training in a company and in a vocational school takes place under the responsibility of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The theory is taught in blocks at the vocational school and usually takes place in three to four weeks in one piece, as the basics of the profession of hydraulic engineer are not taught throughout Germany.

If the units do not take place in the vicinity of the place of residence, the trainees are accommodated for this period in nearby boarding schools or residences. In addition, trainees from southern Germany are deliberately used in northern Germany for the duration of the training, and vice versa, in order to be confronted with the different requirements of the profession.

If you are already at school with mathematics, physics, works/techniques and chemistry, you are quite eligible for a training in hydroengineering. This is because in the later profession it is customary to calculate river slopes, measure currents and depths of waterways, install waterworks, operate special vehicles or analyse water samples for hazardous substances.

The aim of the training as a water builder is to be able to handle tasks that are your own responsibility in the daily operation of waterways after the training period. For example, you will learn the difference between channels and channel depths, how to carry out site-specific shoreline planting, how to build a dike and everything about shoreline protection.

After completing the water polo training, you can aim for a championship title or further training in various technical occupations depending on your ability and experience in the profession. If you have the right to obtain a higher education diploma, you also have the possibility to obtain a baccalaureate diploma and thus the qualification of chief employee or self-employed.
